The Bureau of Economic Research (BER) is a research organ of the University of Dhaka. It is the organization through which mainly the faculty members belonging to the Department of Economics conduct their research activities. Its office is located in the University Arts Faculty Building. Since its inception in 1956, the Bureau has completed a number of studies, has provided a store-house of research experience and has been a source of trained hands for employment by government and private agencies.

The Bureau undertakes research projects whenever such studies appear to have prospects of making a clear addition to knowledge in the related field. The history of the Bureau of Economic Research is to a large extent the history of the social science research movement in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan). As early as 1952, three interested researchtd researchers, Viz. Prof A. F. A. Hussain, Prof. A. Frouk And Prof. Muniruzzaman formed the nucleus of a group who undertook study the social and economic problems of Bangladesh through through collection of first hand date.

Research

A research project when approved by the Managing Committee is offered to a Project Leader who undertakes to complete his project in specified time and is allowed to incur the approved expenses subject to observing certain financial and administrative regulations of the Bureau which is supervised by the Director. The Director of the Bureau is generally a person with a research background and also with administrative experience. The overall activities of the Bureau are reviewed by-the Managing Committee every three months and the Vice-Chancellor reviews the progress of the work annually on the basis of the report to the Managing Committee.

Our Core Values

The Bureau has built up a Library consisting of a collection of useful reference books on research technique and allied topics. The volumes available in the library include books on research methodology, statistical tables and journals of current economic interest. The Bureau has also built up a small data processing cell. Being located in the University and due and due to previous experience, the Bureau has a batch of research workers trained and specialized in empirical, econometric and statistical research techniques In designing and completing research projects they join hands whenever necessary.

Latest Program Activities

The Bureau will conduct as well as promote research in the fields of economic and related subjects. The Bureau will not be precluded from undertaking research in the general field of social sciences which have a bearing on the above fields. It is hoped that this research will help in improving the quality of teaching by providing data as well as an analysis of economic and social problems. In particular, the research will be aimed at finding solutions to many practical problems which will help in policy making in national development. An important part of the programme of the Bureau will be concerned with the training of research workers at different levels, particularly graduate students, so that they can take up independent research work.
